There are lots of things that are capable of making you feel Christmassy in an instant — the first radio play of Fairytale of New York, for instance, or that first bite of mince pie — but really, there’s nothing guaranteed to get you in the spirit quite so fast as donning a cheery Christmas jumper. And while we know that, like all kids, the little lady in your life probably needs zero help getting excited for the big day, there are so many more reasons to get her one, like the fact that it’ll look utterly adorable in the obligatory Christmas Day family photo (and, let’s be honest, on your Instagram).
But cast from your mind any images of the bulky, hand-knitted sweaters you might have suffered through as a child, because like so many products for kids these days, the Christmas jumper has come on leaps and bounds. If traditional is their thing (or if it’s your thing and they’re too small to protest), look to M&S kids’ jumpers for quality constructions and sweet, timeless designs; if you’re after something a bit different for the very small and the older alike, then check out George at ASDA’s great value range of cutesy, contemporary, and downright funny Christmas jumpers. Alternatively, if they need a little coaxing to get into something warm, a character Christmas jumper can work wonders — think Peppa Pig or the gang from Frozen.
It’s not all Fair Isle out there, as our list of the best kids’ Christmas jumpers shows, so keep scrolling for our pick of the knits for Christmas 2017.
There’s more to this novelty Christmas jumper than meets the eye, with lights and music to add to the jolly design. It features a quirky deer motif with tactile applique antlers and button eyes for a hint of texture, and when the reindeer’s nose is pressed, you get a rousing rendition of Jingle Bells. Reviewers were pleased with the quality, but recommended caution when washing due to the mysteriously un-removable batteries. All in all, this looks to be our favourite kids’ Christmas jumper of the year - with lights, music and a Christmas critter, it’s a school contest-winner for sure.
If your child isn’t content with only rocking Peppa merchandise the other 11 months of the year, then this Peppa Pig Christmas jumper is just the thing. The cute design shows Peppa wrapping up presents in preparation for Christmas, and the ribbed bands and cuffs give it a casual look, while the brushed interior promises to be comfy and cosy. Not all buyers were overly impressed with the quality, but agreed it was good for the bargain price. A good value character jumper that’s affordable enough to buy a couple of.
This unisex kids’ Christmas jumper is bright, cheerful and downright adorable with its light green shade and polar bear motif. The bear itself is applique, made with a soft-touch material and finished with 3D details for a design that’s both lovely to look at and fun for small hands to discover, and the composition of breathable cotton is intended them cool and comfortable, with a diagonal button neckline making for easy changing in case of spillages. In sizes from newborn to two years, it’s a sweet option for all little ones.
Need a hand with Christmas prep? Just add this cute kids’ jumper for an instant little helper. This awesomely affordable Christmas jumper is a costume in itself, featuring a sweet trompe l’oeil elf uniform design complete with buttons, belt and obligatory candy cane, and a pom pom-edged neckline. It seems to be quite rare to get a knitted-in design, as opposed to printed, for this price, so we’re pretty impressed by reviewers’ reports of being pleased with the quality and fit.
If you’re looking for something a little different from your average kids’ Christmas jumper, this is it. Strictly speaking a sweatshirt rather than a jumper, and in breathable 100% cotton, it promises to be light and comfortable rather than clammy, and reviewers say it washes well. The eye-catching hot pink shade is an unusual departure from the standard green or red, and the cheery reindeer design is low-key enough to be worn after Christmas, with interesting embroidered and lift-up details. A great light and bright alternative to the usual.
Disney’s Frozen has been a recurring theme on kids’ Christmas wishlists for a few years now, and Christmas 2017 looks to be no exception. Featuring beloved characters Elsa, Anna and Olaf, with contrast baseball-style sleeves and bands in baby pink, this is a superbly girly Christmas jumper that lets them wear their Frozen fandom on their sleeve. Reviewers were generally delighted with this sweater, however some commented that it came up a little small, so it’s worth noting if your tot is tall for their age.
Like ASDA’s other offering on our list, this jumper has a knitted intarsia design that we’re very impressed with for the price. This one, with its smily reindeer motif, tactile 3D details and background of tiny hearts, is too sweet for words, and the scalloped hems and neckline give this kids’ jumper a huge dose of old-fashioned appeal. It’s practical as well as pretty, with the button-up neckline offering to make changing a breeze. Plus, with its festive ‘to and from’ tag, it’s great for gifting.
